To do a drive-by means to go see someone in person without an appointment. For some people this is a preferred method of communication; for others it’s a last resort measure. Disturbingly, this term probably came from gang related drive-by shootings. Instead of ambushing rivals, MBAs are going after their bosses or fellow team members.
For example, an entry level MBA might say to a colleague, “I’ve emailed 3 times, called twice and haven’t gotten a response. I’m going to do a drive-by right now to see if I can catch her in her office. No matter what, I’m determined to get that answer before I present to the board tomorrow.”
