To burn bridges means to destroy any possibility of going back. Business people most often use this term to describe something you do not want to do, such as ending a business relationship that may be valuable in the future.

You might hear a colleague ask, “I’m really excited about this new opportunity, but I don’t want to burn any bridges when I quit. Do you have any advice for maintaining the relationship as I’m leaving?”
