Introducing the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School

Johns Hopkins, a US university well known for its medical and public health schools, plans to broaden its educational horizons in 2010 with the launch of the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School MBA program. The school tapped Yash Gupta as Dean.

As told by BusinessWeek, Gupta intends for the school "to distinguish itself by designing a curriculum that will capitalize on Johns Hopkins’ strength in fields like medicine and public health, have a focus on emerging markets and ethics, and encourage innovation and entrepreneurship."

Classes include interesting options like the "Innovation for Humanity Project" and the "Discovery to Market" class. Technically, Innovation for Humanity is not an option, as it’s required for first years. Students study business principles in emerging markets, and apply the learning in a hands-on 3-week field study in countries like Rwanda, Kenya, or Trinidad. The Discovery to Market class introduces students to cross-functional leadership by sending them into the medical school to identify opportunities and bring them to market.

I love the vision of this new school. Infusing a global mindset and going beyond creating a paper strategy to actually implementing business plans should prove very powerful for both the students and the markets; it may even help change the world.

Best of luck Carey Business School Class of 2012!
