Words of the Week – give the green light

To give the green light is to give approval to proceed with a project or action. For example, the President of a student club might say, “Finance gave us the green light to bring the speaker in; so let’s pick a date and make it happen.”

The term comes from traffic signals where the green light means “go ahead.”
