Words of the Week – on your plate

On your plate is a way to discuss your current scope of responsibilities. For example, if a student club officer asks you to run for a leadership position, and you feel your time is fully committed, you could say, “Thanks so much for thinking of me. I’ve got a lot on my plate right now with classes and the job search. I plan to be very involved in the club, but am not able to run for leadership.”

Alternatively, if you’re feeling like you have excess free time, you might say to your study group, “I don’t have that much on my plate right now. I’d love to take the lead on the Finance case, and someone else can lead next week.”
