To keep someone in the loop means to keep them informed on a situation or project. For example, your manager might say, “I want you to keep me in the loop as estimates come in for the new online campaign. I’m watching the budget closely right now.”
Knowing your manager’s preferred communication style will be helpful here. When people ask to be kept in the loop, some want an email, others want a voicemail and others want a verbal update. If you’re unsure, then ask. Most American managers appreciate subordinates adapting to their styles, and will be more than willing to provide guidance.
